Bus terminals like Managua’s Mercado Roberto Huembes can be overwhelming for some. I personally love stations like this because there is so much to take in!  If you are headed to Peñas Blancas, Granada, Masaya, Rivas, San Jorge or  San Juan del Sur, then you are leaving from here. Busses leave very regularly and are clearly labeled with the destination painted somewhere on the outside. Chances are are the driver and helper will be yelling their destination at you when you walk by.

The bus to Peñas Blancas goes leaves about every half hour from 5am to 6:30am. There is possibly an express bus twice per day at 10am and 4pm. It takes 3hrs and costs 100C$. Double checking this tomorrow.

Managua to Rivas

You have two options, regular service and expreso.

Regular buses leave every 30min from 5am to 6:30pm, take 2.5hrs and cost 66C$. Some continue on to San Juan del Sur, keep reading below for schedule.

To Rivas it costs 72C$ and takes 2hr 20min, to San Jorge it costs 75C$ and takes 2hr 20min and to San Juan del Sur it costs 90C$ and takes 2hrs 40min. Managua to Ometepe

Taxis

There is a taxi stand inside the station with a bunch of drivers lined up for your business. It is highly likely they will overcharge you by a bit, however if you have some fears over the safety of grabbing a taxi from the street then using these gentleman may be what you want to do.  A trip to the UCA Microbus Terminal should cost you about 60-70C$, a trip to the Terminal Mayorero should cost about 60-70C$. A trip to the Managua Airport should cost you about 80-100C$, and a trip to the Mercado Ivan Montenegro (Rama) should cost about 40-50C$.

Safety

As is the same with other busy bus stations, watch your belongings closely here. Locals told me that it is generally considered ‘safe’ to walk around this area in the day time. The Mercado Roberto Huembes is located just off of a main road with an air conditioned Subway Sandwich shop and a grocery store just a block away.  If you are walking in this area, use your common sense and always remain visible. Don’t wander down any empty streets or alleyways. Once the sun goes down I was advised to take a taxi to and from here, and this is the advice I give you.

There are several different toilet options at this station. Some are nicer than others. Look for the words "Servicios Sanitarios".

Very friendly and funny drivers here. They will overcharge you but if you are worried about taking a taxi from the street, then it may be worth your money.

  3. Batman

    Managua => Masaya, yesterday.

    We were charged 18 Cordobas per person. I do not think that this is the correct price though. The ayudante mumbled something aboutpaying for our bags, when we told him that we do not need to pay for bags he got angry, handed us some change and huffed off. Unfortunately my Spanish is not good enough to understand 100%

    Other travelers beware, on regular “chicken” buses the ayudante may sometimes tell you to pay for your bags. You do not need to, only pay for bags on microbuses. This has happened to me a few times over the last month in Nicaragua, some routes are more susceptible than others. Be polite and tell them that you do not need to pay for bags and they will usually leave it at that

  4. Batman

    Managua => Granada

    Buses seem to leave on the hour, and they pass through Masaya. They arrive to the terminal on the corner of Calle Tamarindo y Avenida principal La Isleta. From there it is a few minutes walking to the Centro

    Duration: ±1.5 hour
    Cost: C$25

  6. Sarai

    Salgo de costa rica a las 5pm y llego a la frontera peñas blancas a las 11pm hay buses pollos del lado de nicaragua a esa hora q me lleven a managua? Cual es el horario de esos buses alguien sabe??

  7. Rick Carter

    Is this accurate? Managua to Rivas is 72C$ which translates to $2.20 US Dollars? Two US dollars and twenty US cents? This is really the cost for the bus from Managua to Rivas? Does this include me bringing a suitcase?

    • centrocoasting

      It is accurate. Or at least close, it could be $2.40 no as I havent updated the price in a year or two. It’s not a luxury bus. It’s a
      ‘chicken bus’ which is an old school bus from the USA nicely painted up. They may charge extra for your suitcase depending on size and it will likely go on the roof. Keep your eyes on it as it’s never good to let your stuff out of your sight on chicken buses.

  8. Dana

    Hi,

    Dana

    • centrocoasting

      We haven’t updated that part of this page in a while, but normally there are many buses per day from about 5am to 6pm.
