We do note 100% guarantee accurate information. In general the majority of buses operate between just before sunrise until sunset. Times are listed when we have them, but remember, you are in El Salvador and even the locals say the schedules are 'loco' sometimes. Always plan enough time in your day for travel and plan to be at your destination before the sun sets. Avoid arriving when it's getting dark. Short distance buses will cost between $0.25 and $1.50 and longer distance buses $1.50-$3.00. Some routes offer more than one class of travel: regular class and especial which often has a/c and makes fewer stops but cost a little more. Also, know that you and only you are responsible for your own health and safety in your travels and the choices you make. Travel safe and travel smart - and have fun!

2 travel tips for Las Chinamas – Border Crossing - share your tips below!

  1. Rich Grundy

We did this crossing today by chicken bus from Ataco to Guatemala City, it was all super easy.

We left Ataco on bus 249 at 8.40am and arrived into Ahuachapan 20 mins later at 9am ($0.40 each).

We popped into the supermarket to grab a few bits for lunch and then walked the few minutes over to “Parque General Francisco Menendez”. A small bus marked “Frontera” was waiting in the north west corner and we’re on our way by 9.15am ($0.50 each)

We arrive at the border at 9.45am and walk down the hill, El Salvador immigration is in a nice new building on your right side before the bridge. Once through immigration walk across the bridge and up the hill on the other side. Guatemala immigration is in the middle of the northbound and southbound roads. We’re stamped into Guatemala and out the other side by 10am.

There are several red and green chicken buses waiting, we check which one is leaving first and climb aboard. It leaves at 10.30am with about 9 of us, half tourists.

We reach the final stop in Guatemala City at about 2.30pm and this includes having to swap buses as the first one broke down about in hour in to the journey.

Some people got off before the last stop to change to a bus heading to Antigua.

Came through there from Guatemala city in August 2021 on transporte del sol from the hotel las Américas to santa ana el salvador. Easy border crossing with support from the bus line, the agent came on board the first class double decker.
